The Ultimate Hiking Guide to Lofoten

Hamnøy Fishing Village

If you're a hiking enthusiast, the Lofoten Islands are your next destination. This Norwegian archipelago, located above the Arctic Circle, offers a network of trails that will allow you to explore stunning landscapes, from crystal-clear fjords to snowy peaks. Plus, you can enjoy the phenomenon of the midnight sun. In this blog, you'll find a complete guide with the best hiking trails and practical tips for your trip.

How to get to Lofoten?

The Lofoten Islands offer a variety of airports to start your adventure, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here's a summary to help you make the best decision:

  • Leknes: Well located, but with limited air connections and few car rental options.

  • Svolvaer: Good location, but even fewer available flights and only one car rental company.

  • Harstad/Narvik: Located 3-4 hours from your accommodation, but with excellent connections from Europe and a wide range of rental cars.

An interesting alternative:

  • Bodo: Although it is located outside Lofoten, it offers frequent air connections from Oslo and other European cities. From here, you can take a ferry to Moskenes, an ideal starting point to explore the islands. Additionally, you will find a wide variety of car rental companies.

Why rent a car in Lofoten?

Public transportation in Lofoten is limited and can be difficult for visitors to understand. Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the islands at your own pace and discover hidden corners.

Where to Stay?

On this trip to Lofoten, we will focus on the areas between Å and Svolvær. The distance between the two towns is approximately two hours, so staying anywhere between these two towns will be a good location. However, if you don't want to drive that much, I recommend a few days near Reine and a few days near Leknes or Svolvær.

Here are my favorite options.

Although Lofoten's hikes are short, they are quite demanding due to their steep inclines. Before your trip, I recommend training with hikes that include elevation gain or climbing stairs repeatedly. This will help you acclimatize and enjoy your adventures on the islands to the fullest.

The best time for hiking in Lofoten

Without a doubt, summer is the ideal season to explore the trails of Lofoten. And if you want to have a unique experience, I recommend visiting the islands during the Midnight Sun, which extends from late May to mid-July.Imagine hiking under a sun that never sets, it's a magical feeling!

When is the best time to enjoy the Midnight Sun?

  • Last days of the Midnight Sun: If you want to experience it to the fullest, I recommend visiting Lofoten a few days before the phenomenon ends. You'll see how the sun walks along the horizon all night!

  • Weeks after the Midnight Sun: This period offers a soft and warm light, similar to an eternal sunset. The landscapes are tinged with pastel colors and you'll have the opportunity to enjoy nature at its best without the crowds.

Advantages of hiking during the Midnight Sun:

  • Empty trails: You'll have the trails practically to yourself! Avoid crowds and enjoy the tranquility of nature.

  • More time to explore: With so many hours of daylight, you can make the most of your time in Lofoten and explore more trails.
